Lisbon is hilly, but large parts of the historic centre have been upgraded with dropped kerbs, ramps and flat routes. This guide gathers the most accessible neighbourhoods, wheelchair-friendly transport and where to rent the right mobility equipment for your stay.
Flat ground, wide dropped-kerb pavements, accessible shops and restaurants. The most wheelchair-comfortable zone.
Flat riverside, broad pavements by the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. Good selection of accessible terraces.
Modern, fully flat district with wide squares and the (fully accessible) Oceanarium.
Refurbished riverside promenade, step-free, ideal at sunset.
Alfama, Bairro Alto and Mouraria have narrow lanes, slippery Portuguese cobblestones and steep gradients. Visit with a companion or choose an electric mobility scooter.
Lisbon Metro
Newer stations (Blue and Red lines) have lifts; check the accessibility symbol on the network map. Some older stations still have no lift.
Trams
Historic trams (28, 15) are not accessible. Prefer Carris buses — most have ramps and priority space.
Trains & ferries
CP stations and Transtejo Tagus ferries have boarding ramps. The Cais do Sodré ferry terminal is accessible.
Lisbon Oceanarium, Jerónimos Monastery, National Tile Museum, Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Time Out Market and the riverside walk to Belém are accessible routes. Belém Tower keeps steps inside.
Orthocare Rent delivers to your hotel, Lisbon airport, the cruise terminal or at home. Manual wheelchair from €12/day, mobility scooter and hospital beds with online booking and same-day confirmation.
The flat zones (Baixa, Belém, Parque das Nações) are fully accessible. The hilly historic districts (Alfama, Bairro Alto) have steep gradients and uneven cobblestones — use an electric scooter or plan routes along the riverside.
Yes. Orthocare Rent delivers to your accommodation before check-in, to Lisbon airport or the cruise terminal. Book online and specify the place and time.
Some stations on the Blue and Red lines have lifts, but the network is not yet fully accessible. Check the official updated map before travelling.
Yes — from Ribeira das Naus to Belém the riverside promenade is flat and step-free, with accessible terraces along the way.
